A coffee from Panama has just become the most expensive coffee in the world after selling for a world record $803 a pound (just under half a kilo) at auction.
A 100-pound sack of the Geisha or Gesha coffee was sold for $80,300 at a Best of Panama online auction last week, reports New Worlder, beating the previous most expensive Geisha coffee by over $200 a pound.
Geisha originated in Ethiopia and is revered for its floral and fruity notes. The Panamanian variety in question, the Lamastus family’s Elida Estate’s Geisha Green Tip Natural, grows in volcanic soil in the country’s Chiriqui region and was bought by Taiwan’s Black Gold Coffee Co.
All in all, the auction had 49 different Panamanian coffee lots, attracting buyers from all over the world.
