The Michelin Guide has made its second foray into Mainland China, with its first ever guide to the city of Guangzhou (Canton).
The port city, which sits just to the NorthWest of Hong Kong, is known as the home of Cantonese food, and is seen as one of China’s biggest foodie hubs.
Eight restaurants gained their first star in the Guide, while 19 were given a Bib Gourmand recommendation for “exceptionally good food at moderate prices,” and 32 received a Michelin plate for solid cooking that isn’t quite up to starred level. No two or three stars were awarded.
Michelin now has Guides for two Chinese cities, including Shanghai, as well as for Hong Kong and Macau, part of its wider expansion into Asia that has seen it release guides to Bangkok, Seoul, Singapore, and Taipei in recent years.
