New York has a new three-Michelin-starred restaurant for the first time in 12 years: Jungsik New York, a restaurant that serves a contemporary take on traditional Korean cuisine, run by chef Yim Jung Sik.
Michelin announced the stars at a joint ceremony in Manhattan for the New York, Chicago, and Washington DC guides.
Jungsik New York (there is also a location in Seoul) is a restaurant that redefines modern Korean cuisine with an innovative approach that chef Jung Sik calls "New Korean." He began his culinary career in the Korean army but pursued his passion at the Culinary Institute of America and restaurants Aquavit and Boule in New York and Zuberoa and Akelarre in Spain.
"It was only a matter of time before Korean cuisine got the nouvelle treatment, and a pioneer in this growing movement is Jung Sik Dang," wrote the New York Times about the restaurant. The highest accolade by the Michelin Guide for a Korean restaurant in New York City only underlines the incredibly high level of culinary talent the Asian country produces.
New York is also home to three new two-star restaurants: César, Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare, and Sushi Sho. César, on Hudson Street, headed by chef César Ramirez, was awarded a second star for consistently high standards and precision. Serving world-class seafood, the second star was well-flagged by Ramirez’s many loyal guests and fans.
New York cult favorite Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare was also recognized, where chefs Max Natmessnig and Marco Prins’ style of Japanese French luxury keeps the restaurant one of the most sought-after reservations in the city. At Sushi Sho, chef Keiji Nakazawa carries on the highest level of Japanese tradition and one of the finest omakase experiences in the West, receiving two stars for his achievements.
Chicago and Washington DC also celebrated new stars on the evening with Cariño in Chicago celebrated for chef Norman Fenton’s distinct approach to Mexican cuisine. DC’s Mita, a Latin-American, vegetable-focused restaurant by chefs Miguel Guerra and Tatiana Mora got its first star, as did Omakase at Barrack’s Row in the city.
