May Chow has been named as Asia’s Best Female Chef ahead of the announcement at the S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna sponsored Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list at W Hotel in Bangkok on February 29th 2016.
The Toronto-born and US raised young chef first made a name for herself in Hong Kong with her innovative take on steamed bao buns, combining her Chinese heritage with her American upbringing.
Commenting on the announcement she said: “I am very honoured to be named Asia’s Best Female Chef. I hope I can serve as a role model for other Asian female chefs, providing hope and opportunities for those who want to pursue their passions.”
Chow cut her professional teeth at Bo Innovation with the ‘Demon Chef’ Alvin Leung and at Yardbird with Matt Aberge before going solo. Opening pop up restaurants in Hong Kong her burger shaped bao buns soon captivated a local audience. She went on to open the modern Chinese diner, Little Bao in Hong Kong in 2013, before a second branch in Bangkok, followed by a gastropub, in Hong Kong.
William Drew, group editor of Asia's 50 Best, added that Chow 'represents a new generation of Asian chef-restaurateurs', and that her award is recognition of her bringing 'a fresh perspective to traditional cuisine'.
Chow now has her sights set expanding her restaurant empire overseas with potential options including Melbourne, London and Tokyo but first she'll formally accept her prize at the fifth Asia's 50 Best Restaurants awards ceremony in Bangkok, taking the baton from last year's winner, Margarita Fores.
