The 50 Top Pizza awards were revealed in the home of pizza last night, at the Castel Dell'Ovo in Naples. The 50 best pizzerias in Italy is a new collaboration with Luciano Pignataro, Albart Sapere and Barbara Guerra (LSDM) and includes S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna among its sponsors.
To create the shortlist 100 anonymous inspectors visited about 900 pizzerias throughout the peninsula, drawing up a list of 500 addresses that have slowly been revealed on the 50 Top Pizza website in recent months.
The 50 Top Pizza international awards for pizza were already announced in New York back in June. Last night belonged to the finest pizzerias in Italy.
But what were the best Italian pizzerias to be named on the list? While the podium belonged to the southern Italian region of Campania on the night, Naples was surprisingly not on the winner's step in this inaugural edition.
The Top 3 Pizzerias in Italy
Franco Pepe of Pepe in Grani in Caiazzo scooped gold, while in second place Gino Sorbillo and his pizza factory Gino Sorbillo at the Tribunals triumphed. Third place went to the Friars Salvo of San Giorgio in Cremano.
A lot of special prizes were also delivered during the evening, including Best Pizza going to Pizzarium (Rome) and Best New comer went to Morsi & Rimorsi in Aversa.
