The new film will chronicle the life and times of the Austrian-born chef, in what is being billed as an incredible and emotional true-life story of one of the first celebrity chefs to play a part in reinventing the culinary industry.
Having escaped a tyrannical stepfather in Austria as a teenager, Puck embraced cooking and it became a lifelong vocation. Finding himself in America at age 24, his career really took off in ‘70s Hollywood, when he opened his first restaurant Spago, swiftly garnering a celebrity following for his new-American cuisine. Puck would soon become a household name, with TV appearances, merchandise, dozens of restaurants and even catering for the Oscars amongst his accolades. But as with many great professional successes, his home life would suffer. According to Disney Plus, this is a 'film that showcases the power and strength of the human spirit' in a life-affirming story about food.
“I am not one to dwell on the past, but the way David Gelb told this story made me realise how far I have come from my humble beginnings,” said Puck. “In a single phrase, we call it the American dream.”
While waiting for the return of Chef's Table in July, it's a great reminder of what director David Gelb excels at: storytelling in food and revealing lives lived through the lens of food.
“Wolfgang stepped into the spotlight in a way no chef ever had before,” said Gelb. “In doing so, he showed that a chef could be a storyteller, a teacher and a friend. This is the tradition of Wolfgang Puck, and it has been a profound honour to tell his story.”
