A travel and adventure company are giving adventurous wine lovers a once in a lifetime chance to salvage century old bottles of wine, champagne and cognac from a shipwreck off the coast of Cornwall.
Cookson Adventures, are organising a salvage operation made up of scientists, archaeologists, and oenologists to help surface and test the collection of 100-year-old wines, champagne and brandy and for the right price you can join too.
The ship, codename Mercury, apparently set sail from Bordeaux in 1918 laden with fine wine, bound for England, when it was sunk by a German U-boat. The bottle have lain at the bottom of the ocean for a hundred years and many experts believe that conditions at the bottom of the sea may have preserved the wines’ condition and even improved it.
The stay includes accommodation in Cornish mansion on the Falmouth coast in the south of England, as well as daily helicopter transferal to the salvage vessel. Participants will enjoy a hands on experience of mapping the shipwreck and planning and executing the salvage operation. Wine experts will be on hand to test the vintage with special technology that will allow them to extract the wine from bottles without disturbing the cork.
On top of it all, guests will eat special meals prepared especially by a private chef and enjoy some exceptional vintage wine throughout their week-long stay.
