We put olives in martinis all the time, no problem. So what’s wrong with the idea of a pickle in beer?
A popular Internet myth claims that you can super-flavour your light, insipid big-brand beer by slipping a pickle into it a minute before you bring it to your lips - and there might just be some truth in it.
It’s the magic of fermentation, as well as the complementary flavours at play, that lend this boost theory a bit more weight than most. If you don’t believe it, try it for yourself.
It’s true that you can enhance the flavour of almost anything by adding pickles, or at least some kind of fermented flavour element. The addition of the olive to the martini has less to do with the olive itself, but the fact that the small fruit has been fermented in salt and vinegar for some time before it found its way into the bottom of your martini glass.
Adding a pickle to your beer is exactly the same principle. So if you’re ever stuck with nothing else to drink but a light, insipid, flavourless lager, and you prefer the bigger, bolder flavour of an artisanal brew, you can make your way back to flavourtown by simply slipping your pickle in there. If you want to up your game on this one, add a splash of pickle juice in there as well. Give it a go. Let us know what you think (just try not to get too pickled).
