The search for the world's best sommelier has finally ended. The prestigious award when to Paolo Basso, a Swiss sommelier who competed in the 14th annual A.S.I. Contest of the Best Sommelier in the World.
Basso was among 54 contestants from all over the world who descended in Tokyo to compete for the world title last week. He previouly came in second place at the world championships in 2000, 2007 and 2010. Other honors include being named the European Sommelier Champion 2010.
In order to win the contest, which is sponsored in part by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, Basso faced off with other contestants in a series of challenges that highlighted their skills as sommelier. The awards were announced in front of an audience of 5,000 people.
