Opened in 2015 on the site of a famous Greenwich Village coffee house, Caffe Dante, Dante claimed the top prize of World's Best Bar at the 2019 Spirited Awards in New Orleans during this year's Tales of the Cocktail last month.
“To anyone that’s been there, thank you,” said Dante’s creative director Naren Young, accepting the award at the Orpheum Theatre. “And to anyone that hasn’t, we look forward to welcoming you.”
Dante also won Best American Restaurant Bar for the quality of its Australian-Italian food, the second time in three years which means it will now be retired from the category.
Dante can now add this title to its collection which already includes number 9 on the World’s 50 Best Bars list and Time Out New York’s Bar of the Year.
The other big winner on the night was Singapore's Atlas, which took home two Spirited Awards: Best International Cocktail Bar and World's Best Spirits Selection.
Individual winners on the night included Monica Berg of London's Tāyer and Elementary, who won International Bartender of the Year and Julio Cabrera of Cafe La Trova in Miami, who was named American Bartender of the Year. A Lifetime Achievement Award went to Barcelona cocktail legend Javier De Las Muelas of Dry Martini.
The Spirited Awards honoured, for the first time, some classic watering holes including Hemmingway’s Havana haunt El Floridita, which won the Timeless International Award, while Napoleon House in New Orleans won the Timeless American Award.
