The James Beard Foundation announced the 2020 James Beard Awards nominees, sponsored by S.Pellegrino, during a live-streamed, virtual event on Twitter on May 4.
Hundreds of nominees were announced in nearly 60 categories of the Foundation’s various awards programs, including Restaurant, Chef, Restaurant Design and Media. The categories highlight some of the best chefs and restaurants in the US, as well as food journalists, books and broadcast media.
In a change to the normal program, which would have seen the 30th Anniversary James Beard Awards go ahead in Chicago, the decision was made in collaboration with chefs and restaurateurs across the US to continue with an online event to bolster an industry reeling in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Foundation tweeted:
"It was clear that those whose work in 2019 led them to be selected as a semifinalist—and perhaps ultimately a nominee or a winner—deserved the recognition they earned."
"Some of the restaurants announced today are temporarily closed. Some are operating in another form, such as take-out only or meal relief operations. And some have already announced that they will permanently close."
"Today we acknowledge the accomplishments of all of the people behind these restaurants, and the need for us all to fight for this industry that employs 16 million people and is a vital part of American culture."
The Media Awards will be announced via press release on May 27, 2020, and the Restaurant & Chef Award winners are now slated to be announced on Friday, September 25, 2020, from Chicago, broadcast live via the James Beard Foundation’s Twitter feed.
