When you have a bad cough you usually reach for honey and lemon, right? Well, scientists have found a tastier remedy and you won’t believe what it is: chocolate.
The Daily Mail reports that researchers discovered that a cocoa alkaloid has been found to be more effective at treating cough than codeine. The study was conducted at the Imperial College of London but researchers at the University of Hull took things one step further. They tested a new cocoa-based cough syrup and found it worked like a charm.
The drug is called Unicough and is already available in the United Kingdom. What makes it so effective? The fact that cocoa can relieve inflammation and coats the throat in a way that suppresses the urge to cough, according to researchers.
Unicough hasn’t made it across the Atlantic yet but we’re keeping our fingers crossed. In the meantime, researchers say that “slowly sucking on a piece of chocolate may provide some relief.” It won’t be as effective as the innovative cough syrup but it sure gives us an excuse to indulge in some chocolate. Chocoholics, rejoice!
