The hundred day countdown to Expo Milano 2015 was started on the 21st January, marked by a video message sent directly from outer space by the Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.
Even from the zero gravity confines of space, Cristoforetti took time to send a message about how important it is to enjoy a meal at the table: “Today on the International Space Station we’ll be eating quinoa salad with mackerel,” say said as the food floated around behind her head in a specially sealed package, “Mealtimes are a very important moment of our day.. it’s wonderful, every day, you can sit at the table with the whole world.”
The astronauts video will be part of a larger project called Short Food Movie in which people from all over the world are being asked to submit their short movies about why food is important to them. They will eventually be compiled and shown during the Expo inside Pavilion Zero - the first place guests will visit as an introduction to the Expo.
With only 99 days left before the start of the first ever Universal exhibition to focus on food, there is still time to get tickets to Expo Milano 2015 with an online reduction of up to 20%. There’s a number of different types of tickets: family packages, special school tickets and discounts for students, children and those over 65.
If you’re in Milan early and want a taste of what the Expo has to offer, a new exhibition starting January 24th will take visitors through the theme of the Expo using examples of food in art.
‘Food in art, from the 17th century to Warhol’ is pitched as a ten course exhibition of art that will show how many painters have used the foods and dishes of their native lands in their works.
The exhibition will feature a 100 works that focus on food and promises to take visitors on ‘a journey through art, food and places’.
