At first glance, these expertly crafted designer cakes don’t look like the sort of objects you’d want to bite into.
MARZIPAN AND SPONGE
However, though they may resemble polished stones they actually consist of layers of sponge cake enclosed in marbled marzipan decorated with 24kt edible gold.
These cool cakes are the work of designer Kia Utzon-Frank and her KUFStudios. Along with baking amazing cakes, Utzon-Frank is also a jewellery designer, sculptor, and start-up entrepreneur.
Each designer cake is bespoke made to brief for large events and available in a range of shapes and sizes.
CLERKENWELL DESIGN WEEK
Utzon-Frank will be launching KUFCakes at this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week (24-26 May) in London. A number of cone-shaped cakes (see above) in lemon drizzle sponge with vanilla mousse, and vanilla sponge and espresso mousse, with dark chocolate ganache flavours will be available from 155 Bar and Kitchen.
“It struck me that it should be possible to print on marzipan, and if I could find a marzipan printer I could design bespoke cakes for specific events," says Utzon-Frank. "I love geometric shapes, gradients, stones, cakes, and making things that make people curious and surprised.”
The cakes will be available for a special one-off price of £9.50 each during Clerkenwell Design Week. Prices vary for bespoke projects.
