Food meets Fashion: Chanel and Adidas Invest in Sustainable Agriculture

The food, agriculture and fashion sectors are continuing to meld as French fashion house Chanel and sportswear brand Adidas announce major investments in projects related to sustainable agriculture.

The threat to supply chains, as well as the overarching need for more sustainable materials and practices, is pushing the agriculture and fashion industries closer together. Chanel announced a $25 million investment in the Landscape Resilience Fund (LRF) a non-profit developed by green group WWF, and Swiss-based social enterprise South Pole.

The LRF is aiming to raise $100 million by 2025 to invest in projects that will promote sustainable agriculture, protect forests and support small-scale farmers in developing countries.

The world’s biodiversity is under major threat, particularly due to deforestation related to the production of foods like palm oil and beef, but also for the raw materials that feed the fashion industry. Fashion’s supply chain is under increased pressure due to climate change and Chanel’s investment represents a progressive approach to pro-actively supporting sustainable practices.
