THE STORY BEHIND WHITE STRAWBERRIES
White strawberries from Chile appeared in the 18th century. In 1714, the maritime engineering officer Amédée-François Frézier brought back five plants to cultivate in France, more precisely in the garden of the king at Versailles.
The white strawberries where planted next to wild strawberries. Their crossing gave birth to a round and white strawberry, slightly pinkish with scarlet pips: the white strawberry that we know today.
The species, which had almost disappeared, was updated in 2003 by a group of Dutch farmers. In recent years, a farmer from Fréjus (Var) has also grown it. Because of its rarity, count on spending about 9 euros on 200 grams of white strawberries.
WHAT IS THE TASTE OF A WHITE STRAWBERRY?
The flavor of white strawberries is sweet, sweet and slightly acidic. Some say that its taste is reminiscent of pineapple, hence its scientific name Fragaria x ananassa.
HOW TO ENJOY WHITE STRAWBERRIES
The white strawberry can be eaten plain, just like the other strawberry varieties, but it also makes a perfect addition to fruit salad or a homemade dessert such as strawberry shortcake.
