Anthony Bourdain’s legacy is remembered by his colleagues and friends through a new scholarship at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), in partnership with friends and fellow chefs Eric Ripert and José Andrés.
The two chefs announced on June 19 that they will be celebrating the birthday of Bourdain, June 25, with the Anthony Bourdain Legacy Scholarship, a new scholarship for students of the CIA who hope to follow Bourdain’s widely traveled path of global discovery.
The CIA is currently raising funds for the Scholarship which will allow students to pursue a semester abroad or take part in one of the CIA’s global cuisines and culture programs.
“Travel was such a part of who he was; it was life-changing for him,” said L. Timothy Ryan, the president of the school in an article in the New York Times.
Andrés and Ripert had wanted to commemorate their friend with a celebration on his birthday, rather than as something related to the day that he died. The scholarship was a result of talks with the CIA who had also been thinking of a way to remember the former pupil (Bourdain graduated from the school in 1978).
#BOURDAINDAY
On May 30, Ripert and Andres had posted the announcement of #BourdainDay, coinciding with Anthony Bourdain's birthday on June 25, asking fans to join them in the celebrations by creating their own videos with the hashtag #BourdainDay on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. They published their own dedication on Ripert's Instagram account.
Yesterday, they reinforced the message with the addition of the news of the scholarship. “June is a very important month. We are going to celebrate the birthday of our dear friend, Anthony Bourdain, June 25th. In his honour, the Culinary Institute of America has announced the Anthony Bourdain Legacy Scholarship. For students pursuing a semester abroad and students participating in the global cuisine and culture experiences… Happy Birthday Tony.” said Ripert and Andres.
Bourdain passed away on June 8, 2018, in a hotel room in the Alsace region of France. He was one of the most well-recognized food personalities in the world whose curiosity, humour and brilliant storytelling opened up unknown cultures to viewers and readers all over the globe.
