Diners in search of the world's cheapest Michelin star food need not wait much longer with plans just announced by Chan Hon Meng of Singapore's first Michelin starred food stall, to share his now famous braised chicken and rice dish with diners across Asia in a new chain of restaurants.
Partnering up with the multinational culinary company, Hersing Culinary, which also holds the Asia franchise for the popular Tim Ho Wan chain, Meng told the press “I’m very happy to find the right partner ... It’s important that they are very enthusiastic about the food and beverage industry and they put their customers first."
When the inaugural Michelin guide for Singapore 2016 dropped in the summer, Chan Hon Meng became an overnight celebrity running of one of two of the world's first Michelin food stalls: Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle. Diners consistently queued up for hours for a taste of his talked about Chicken and rice dish sold at just $2 (£1.10), as die hard Michelin food fans debated the place of 'street food' in one of the world's most prestigious guides.
The partners will first collaborate on an 80-seater restaurant named Hawker Chan located just three minutes’ walk from the current stall in Singapore, with air-conditioning and sit-down dining (at higher prices) before opening branches across Asia.
The modest chef, who currently works 17 hour days at his stall will oversee the new operations while his wife and family will look after the Singaporean hawker stall that changed their future. Commenting on the life change a philosophical Chan is reported as saying: “If you work hard, you can be recognised and your day will come.” (AFP RelaxNews)
