Oprah Winfrey is proudly exhibiting her green thumb in the June issue of O Magazine. She and lifestyle expert Bob Greene are pictured on the cover of the magazine during a recent trip to her farm in Hawaii.
Located in Maui, Oprah's lush 16-acre farm is shaped like a half moon and produces over 100 different types of fruit and vegetables. On average, 145 pounds of produce is harvested each week.
Having been raised on a Mississippi farm by her grandmother, Oprah is no stranger to working the land. She explained that she wanted to set up a farm in Maui to give back to the local community.
''One day my friend Bob Greene said, ''What if we give back to the land - and find a way to give back to Maui?'' His point was that about 90 percent of the food on the island is flown or shipped in from outside, which makes it very expensive to buy - not to mention the carbon footprint involved in getting it here.''
