A man from England has become the first foreigner to win the Concours National des Fromagers, a French award given to talented cheesemongers during an annual competition held in the city of Lyon.
Matthew Feroze took a sabbatical from his job two years ago to pursue his passion for French cheese.
He had to choose and mature a selection of cheeses to present to the judges. He also had to show his skills in cutting blocks of cheese in specific weights and a blind tasting.
Speaking with the Independent after winning the competition Feroze said, “I fell in love with France, and French cheese, when I came to Lyon to learn French after university,”
“There is something very deep and rich about cheese and about the people involved in cheese. "
The English Civil Servant beat 15 of the country's best cheesemongers to win the competition.
