Americans will be celebrating the nation's biggest holiday this week: the 4th of July. That date marks the country's independence and all eyes will be on the White House, not only for political reasons but also for food.
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are well known foodies. Aside from using food memorabilia to lure voters, the Obamas have redefined the role of food in the White House. Michelle is known for her Let's Move anti-obesity campaign, establishing the White House garden and writing a book about it.
The First Lady's garden was a domino effect and led to White House honey produced by bees living in hives near the vegetable patch. That honey is one of the ingredients in the White House Honey Ale, beer that is produced by the White House chefs and served to visitors. President Obama made history as being the nation's first president to have beer brewed in the White House.
Not many presidents make culinary history. What does all this amount to? It just goes to show the power of food. With stellar chefs like Thomas Keller and Grant Achatz putting America in the spotlight, you could say the country is reaching a new gastronomic frontier. Happy 4th of July!
