Bored of the same old food from your canteen? Enough of that sandwich in front of your monitor? Now there’s hope: the lunch beat may be soon coming to your town, having you dancing your socks off to throbbing club music until it’s time to get back to work. The Swedes seem to love the Lunch Beat project and sure enough, the lunch beat fever is catching up in other European places too.
Some people in Stockholm started it as a funny, unusual way to spend their lunch break: it first began in a parking lot with only 14 participants in 2010. It took a while to get noticed, but once it caught some steam, it became quickly popular: a recent event in the Swedish capital drew 500 dance enthusiasts. Meanwhile, other Swedish cities followed, then Finland and Serbia. Portugal is next in line to begin.
The party only lasts one hour (from noon to one) and it’s alcohol-free, considering you’re due back to work. There is no profit-making: a cover is charged but only to pay for the rent of the venue and the food – it’s still a lunch break after all. The only thing that’s not provided is a post-dance shower. So far, lunch beaters don’t seem to mind.
