Despite living a humble life at Baekyangsa, a seventh-century temple located within South Korea’s Naejangsan National Park, Kwan has been recognised around the world for her holitic approach to cuisine. She first enchanted Eric Ripert of New York’s Le Bernardin, before being featured in a 2017 episode of Netflix’s Chef’s Table series, as well as earning respect from some of the world’s best chefs, from Noma’s René Redzepi, to Mingoo Kang of Mingles.

Previous icon award winners include Bangkok chef 'Jay Fai', as well as Japanese pioneers Seiji Yamamoto and Yoshihiro Murata.
