While the new plant-based egg will be made from vegan ingredients the company has not yet revealed the ingredients that will be used, although early speculation suggests it might be soy protein, as used in their existing product range.

Commenting on the release of the Next Egg, Next Meats CEO Ryo Shirai said that the company also hopes to “raise awareness of the issues that surround egg production”.

Vegan eggs are nothing new, with a San Francisco company launching the Just Egg vegan egg made from mung bean protein a few years ago, and other international alternatives following suit. But this new offering suggests a growing trend and enthusiasm among consumers to seek viable vegan alternatives.
