When The James Beard Foundation formed it was because a group of his closest friends, led by Peter Kump and Julia Child, didnt want his home in Greenwich Village to be sold after his death.
James Beard had used the house throughout his life to welcome students, authors, chefs and food related professionals to come and cook, test dishes and swap recipes - the house quickly became a haven for American cuisine. In 1986, one year after James' death, the house was re-opened by the foundation to provide a center for culinary arts, a place that still exists today.
James was a motivational man and this dedication to keep his work and his name alive is proof of how much he inspired others.
With that in mind FDL thought we'd bring a collection of famous quotes from the no-nonsense man himself: James Beard.
These quotes have been compiled from the online database Brainy Quotes:
"Food is our common ground, a universal experience".
"A gourmet who thinks of calories is like a tart who looks at her watch".
"I believe that if ever I had to practice cannibalism, I might manage if there were enough tarragon around".
"I don't like gourmet cooking or "this" cooking or "that" cooking. I like good cooking".
"Too few people understand a really good sandwich".
