Luxury and aspirational lifestyle magazine Robb Report, which caters to those who have it and want to know how to spend it, released their annual Best of the Best issue where they sift through the rest to find the very best. In the food and drink section, they unearthed quite a few gems. Not least, Chris Shepherd, who according to them is the best chef in the world.
The former James Beard winner (2014) Shepherd closed his famous Underbelly restaurant in Houston, Texas to concentrate on his One Fifth concept – to open five distinct restaurant projects in the space of five years. The restaurants were to last a year only and his One Fifth Steak proved a massive success, while other iterations Mediterranean and UB Preserv continue to thrive.
Known for his down-to-earth good food and his admiration of immigrant cuisines which he absorbs into his own cooking, Shepherd is also known for being an all-round stand-up guy. His non-proft Southern Smoke has donated over 1.4 million dollars to people in need over the last few years. “Considering the delicious, creative food he serves and the scale of his ambition, you won’t find a better chef around right now,” claims Robb Report.
Other restaurants and establishments to make Robb Report’s Best of the Best 2019 include Tomos Parry’s Brat of London, for Best New Restaurant, Europe, Virgilio Martínez’s Mil, Peru as Best Destination Restaurant, Aulis, Hong Kong, for New Restaurant, Asia, Mei Lin of Nightshade, Los Angeles for Best Debut, chef Lucho Martinez Burelo’s Emilia, Mexico City for Cultural Fusion and Bakery: Vaner, Tokyo. Best Dish was given to Vegetarian Shawarma at Noma.
