Australia’s image as a wine country is somewhat deceptive. Most wine drinkers living outside of Australia get to see, or in this case taste, only a small part of what this enormous country has to offer. The export market is primarily dominated by big brands and bulk wine, but there is a thriving scene of small and mid-sized wine producers that produce outstanding wines. Some of these wines can be difficult to find, which means visiting Australia is the best option to explore all these wonderful wines.
To get you started, here are a few cellar doors in South Australia you shouldn’t miss.
TORBRECK
Barossa is perhaps the most well-known wine region in Australia. It’s a place every wine lover should visit at least once. But if you do visit Barossa be warned: there is a strong chance that you will be back, probably sooner than later.
While in Barossa go have a glass (or two) at Torbreck’s beautiful cellar door. Here you can sample some of the finest wines Barossa has to offer. Torbreck sources a lot of their grapes from old vineyards, and when I say old I mean well over 100 years old. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

ASHTON HILLS
If you are yearning for a peaceful place and some Pinot Noir then you should pop by Ashton Hills. Their savory and elegant Pinot Noir wines are a great example that Australia is not just about big and bold reds. You can book a Pinot Noir experience at their intimate cabin overlooking vineyards in the beautiful Piccadilly Valley. If you consider yourself as a bonafide Pinot Noir aficionado, then Ashton Hills is definitely a must.

SEPPELTFIELD
Australia and Barossa, in particular, used to be a hotspot for fortified wines. Rich and sweet wines resembling Port and Sherry were a staple for Barossa.
Although Australian fortified wines is a relatively small category but fear not, you can still find some fantastic examples of this unique wine style, and Seppeltfield’s cellar door is the perfect place to discover Australian fortified wines.
Here you can reserve various kinds of tastings, such as a Fortified & Canape Tasting and you can even book a Segway tour, but if you really want to spoil yourself go for the Centennial Cellar Experience. Seppeltfield has probably the world’s longest and only unbroken collection of single vintage tawny wine dating back to 1878, which basically makes the cellar an incredibly delicious museum.
I suggest you find your birth year and ask for a taste.

DEVIATION ROAD
Adelaide Hills is one of the most exciting wine regions in Australia at the moment. The Hills, as the locals call it, is only an Uber ride away from the city of Adelaide, which makes the region convenient for a tasty day trip.
Enjoy the beautiful winding roads flanked by eucalyptus trees, and if you suddenly feel like having a glass of bubbles, check out Deviation Road. This cellar door is a haven for all bubble freaks and sparkling wine lovers. Pour yourself a glass of Loftia Vintage Brut and just soak in the beautiful surroundings.

D’ARENBERG
D’Arenberg shocked the whole McLaren Vale when they built the d’Arenberg Cube, but it has since become a popular attraction. According to Chester Osborn (d’Arenberg’s larger than life winemaker) making wine is like a puzzle hence a cellar door shaped like a Rubik’s cube.
The Cube is a tasting room, an “Alternate Realities Museum” and a restaurant all in one package. Inside you can find a sensory room, virtual fermenter, 360° video room and probably the craziest toilets you will ever see.
You can stop by for a reasonably ordinary wine tasting experience at the top floor, or you can book a masterclass where you will learn how to blend and bottle your own wine, and you even get a winemaker certificate at the end of the session. Fun!
