Every now and then we’re reminded of the enormous power of food; how the simple gesture of cooking for or sharing food with someone, of breaking bread, can make a huge difference in people’s lives.
Reports have emerged concerning the commendable actions of Rome police on encountering a lonely elderly couple. According to The Independent, on investigating sounds of distress coming from the home of 94-year-old Michele and his 84-year-old wife Jole, police found the former consoling his deeply upset wife, who was distraught at the state of the world.
Take Action
The four policemen – Andrea, Alessandro, Ernesto and Mirko – decided to take action, and were soon preparing a simple dish of butter, cheese and pasta (cacio e pepe?) for the couple, who rarely receive visitors.
A translated police statement released on Facebook reads: “Sometimes the loneliness melts into tears. Sometimes it's like a summer storm. It comes suddenly and overtakes one. Jole and Michele they love each other. But when the loneliness is a burden on the heart, it may happen that they lose hope ... so loud in their despair that, in the end, somebody call the state police.”
