The Grand Gelinaz! Shuffle was held across the world last night as 37 of the best chefs on the planet swapped their restaurants for one night of gastro-globetrotting.
The locations of exactly where each chef would be cooking were kept secret right until the final minutes with some places, like Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana in Italy, giving the game away with their final few social posts.
Rene Redzepi was at David Thompson’s Nahm restaurant in Bangkok while Thompson travelled to cook at Le Plaza Athénée usually manned by Alain Ducasse. Ducasse was instead sent to Lido 88 in Italy.
Danny Bowein came over from his Mission Chinese restaurant in New York to take the helm at Rene Redzepi’s Noma restaurant and the Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez left the warmth of Lima for the remote location of Paul Cunningham’s Henne Kirkeby Kro restaurant in the North of Denmark. The Italians Davide Scabin and Massimo Bottura were both on flights heading to New York.
Fine Dining Lovers got in on some of the action, travelling to Le Calandre in the North of Italy to taste the food of Alexandre Gauthier as he took over the three-star kitchen of Massimiliano Alajmo. Gauthier spent a few days before the dinner in Italy, visiting Alajmo’s suppliers and created a menu of nine dishes inspired by what he found, all while Alajmo got his creative teeth sunk into Yannick Alleno’s Pavillon Ledoyen restaurant in Paris.
The night went off with a bang as chefs and, most importantly with this year’s Gelinaz!, crews from all the kitchens taking part were heavily involved in the event. You can see more about each restaurant and what happened throughout the evening on The Gelinaz! Digital Wall and you can also see some great tweets, pics of dishes and comments below in our simple Gelinaz! Shuffle Social Slide Show.
