The Independent reports that the Italian magazine Italia a Tavola has created a fake restaurant posting on Trip Advisor to show just how easy it is the game the reviewing site.
To show how easy the system can be manipulated, the magazine created a fake restaurant and posted 10 perfect score reviews.
Before long the restaurant, Ristorante Scaletta, which was listed in Moniga del Gara, was ranked on the site as the best restaurant in the area.
Speaking to the Independent, a representative for Trip Advisor said: “It is a pretty meaningless experiment to create a fake listing or reviews just to try and catch us. We know that, when fraudsters attempt to manipulate the rankings on our site, they leave behind patterns that we can and do trace.”
Whatever the statement says it seems the system was easily gamed this time.
