Don't you just hate it when an idiot taps your beer? It's the worst prank ever. Beer foams all over the place and you end up drenched in precious liquid you would have rather savored. While scientists can't prevent someone from tapping your beer in jest they have explained why it foams after sudden impact.
This video we found at Gizmodo brews it all down to the facts. Apparently, it's all due to compression waves that break up CO2 bubbles in beer turning them into foamy clouds of microbubbles that expand and skyrocket right out of the bottle.
