It is indeed a great year for Italian Opera as a whole, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s birthday and the 100th anniversary of the Opera Festival in Verona. The night at the Bolshoi culminated in the presence of a number of international guests, including Mr. Fabio Capello, Russia’s National Soccer Coach and Nicoletta Mantovani, the wife of the late Luciano Pavarotti. The spotlight was on the young talents, two Italian, Maria Teresa Leva and Ugo Tarquini, and two Russian Opera singers from the Bolshoi Foundation, who delighted the audience with famous arias and a grand finale singing O Sole Mio.
A menu was designed for the occasion by Italian Chef Mirko Zago of the Syr Restaurant in Moscow. Zago has been living in Moscow for 12 years and fully represents Italian excellence abroad, his Tortellini Giuseppe Verdi were a hit during the dinner. Each dish was named after an Italian Aria, Opera or Composer. Guests enjoyed traditional Italian recipes with a twist, tasting the flavour of the Nabucco, Rigoletto and Trovatore, as much as Giuseppe Verdi and Gioachino Rossini.
