Subway shops made a name for themselves by selling footlong sandwiches. A decade ago, the chain gained popularity for the Subway diet after a customer lost weight eating only their sandwiches. Now, Subway wants to go vegan.
Subway developed vegan sandwiches that are set to debut in stores around the Washington, D.C. area. The sandwich chain was nudged by the organization Compassion Over Killing, which persuaded the company to develop protein-rich vegan options to the menu. So far, the three vegan sandwiches Subway will be testing out are: Sweet Riblet, Malibu Greek and Italian Black Bean.
The company is no stranger to vegetarian options. Last summer they offered a vegan option in Canada with the “Totally Vegged” vegan patty. Subway also serves a vegetarian patty in the U.S. but it contains dairy and eggs. Its Italian breads are already vegan and the nine-grain wheat bread comes close, but isn’t vegan because it contains honey.
It's yet to be seen if the sandwiches will be a hit but they may please the growing vegan population in the United States: about 1 million Americans are estimated to be vegan, according to a 2008 Vegetarian Times study.
