Photographed food is an icon of our times: scrutinized, deconstructed, cut up and displayed or disdained, the representation of food becomes a new way of looking at society, denouncing vices and contradictions.
Until November 13, Paris is actively taking part in the food-photography pairing with a new edition of the Festival International de la Photographie Culinarie: 41 participants from around the world – from Spain to Japan, from Peru to Australian – have been invited to interpret with three photographs per person the theme of street food.
The festival, founded and overseen by Jean-Pierre PJ Stephan, includes various prizes and juries. The most prestigious, the Grand Prix, is awarded by a jury lead by Edouard Cointreau, the President and founder of the World Awards Gourmand Cookbook and comprised of internationally renowned photographers, gourmands and journalists. Just as coveted, the Grand Prix de la Photographie du Patrimonie is overseen by Catherine Dumas, the senator and Paris council woman who coordinates the journalists and deputies. There will also be a prize given by the public, and voting is possible on the website until midnight of November 8th.
A special guest to this year’s edition, the French chef Thierry Marx has always been a staunch defender of nomadic cuisine, which he considers to be the «best alternative to industrial junk food »and in 2009 he founded the first Ecole de street food in Bordeaux. After earning two Michelin stars at the Castello Cordeillan-Bages, a countryside Relais-Chateaux, he’s been at Paris’s Mandarin Oriental since spring 2011.
