Tips & tricks

When it comes to the method of this recipe, there’s very little to be said in terms of tips and tricks. Our only tip is to make sure you have a good blender to hand and ensure the ice added isn’t too large for the blades in your blender. With the ingredients, you’ll want to check that your avocado is perfectly ripe as this adds the desired velvety texture to the smoothie. If your avocado isn’t quite ripe enough for the smoothie, you can actually employ a few quick shortcuts to ripen it faster, including using the microwave, the oven or even housing it with apples to help. Once you’ve mastered the trick of getting a spot-on ripe avocado, there are lots of other exciting recipes to try making with this green, creamy ingredient. Avocado ice cream is a great plant-based take on a refreshing dairy dessert, or an avocado chocolate mousse is an inventive way to finish a dinner party with friends.

In the recipe above we’ve shared a dairy-free option, using coconut milk as a base. You can, of course, swap the milk for your preferred variety, be it almond or oat milk. Depending on the milk you use, you’ll get a slightly different tasting smoothie each time. Equally, many of the other ingredients can be tweaked. Honey can be switched for maple syrup to add caramel and vanilla flavors, and the frozen pineapple can be swapped for mango if that’s more to your liking. Some chefs will also introduce extra greens, like spinach, for added nutritional benefits or flavored protein powders, like vanilla. This is completely optional and down to your own personal choice.

How to serve it

Serve this smoothie straight away, fresh from the blender, in a tall glass or smoothie jam jar if you have one in your kitchen. Pop a colorful striped paper straw into the smoothie along with a wedge of lime for garnish to finish this drink off. If you’re making this for a special brunch, then enjoy it alongside scrambled eggs and toasted sourdough bread. Storage

Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh, but if you transfer it to an airtight container and store in the fridge right away you can extend the shelf life for a day or so. If you make your smoothie with dairy, instead of the coconut milk in our recipe, it won’t last as long, so you’ll need to consume it within 24 hours.
