Brittany Powell is an Oregon based artist: together with the Sandwich Artist project you can see in the gallery at the top, we asked her some questions about her relationship with food. Here are her answers...
What is the first taste you remember, and why?
Raw green beans, warm from the sunshine. My parents used to grow most of our vegetables in our back yard. It was my job to pick the produce for dinner, and I naturally sneaked a few tastes.
What is your comfort food?
Tomato soup. Instead of birthday presents, my husband gives me a yearly membership to the Tomato Soup of the Month Club. This means he makes me a batch of tomato soup every month. The counterpart is that I bake him a batch of cupcakes each month.
If you were a dish, which one would you be?
Underbaked chocolate chip cookies. I get things done as fast as possible, and chocolate chip cookies are the quickest way to get a delicious chocolate fix.
Can you share an eating experience tied to the most incredible taste of your life?
We ate our way through Argentina a few years ago and fell in love with the food. The most memorable experience was our lunch at a gaucho festival in San Antonio de Areco--the only options were steak or steak on a roll. We each opted for steak on a roll, washed down with wine from a juice box, while cheering on gauchos with a family of five children who befriended us.
A ‘tasteful’ suggestion you’d give your best friend?
Try making marshmallows at home. I have to restrain myself from whipping up a batch every other week.
What is something you’d never eat?
Dog or horse.
What food would you happily die eating?
Chocolate mousse.
What’s the ultimate taste?
Sweet, toasty, and salty.
Year 2050: in your opinion, what do we found on our tables?
Hopefully we will all fill ourselves with produce from our own gardens or nearby growers.
If you close your eyes and think of fine dining, what comes to mind?
Fine dining is the best meal you can possibly have in a particular situation, whether that means a warm pot luck with friends, street food while traveling, or an ice cream bar on a hot day.
