Virtual food envy days could soon be over with Instagram now boasting a new food ordering function, allowing users to order food directly through the app at the click of a button.
The photo-sharing social media app said the initiative was designed to help small businesses struggling with the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic by allowing them to promote themselves as they pivot to take out and delivery, and to let people support local food outlets.

The scheme was first launched in the US and Canada with plans to roll out worldwide.
Instagram has already proved an invaluable communication tool for chefs during lockdown, from Massimo Bottura's Kitchen Quarantine show on IGTV to chefs sharing their home cooked recipes with their followers.
How Diners can order through Food Delivery via Instagram
- Check if the restaurant has an Order Food button on their Instagram account profile or a Food Orders sticker in their Instagram story.
- Then simply tap on the Order Food or Food Orders sticker or button and you’ll be redirected to one of Instagram's partner’s websites (example: ChowNow, Uber Eats), pick your food of choice and complete your purchase.
- You can share a restaurant's Food Orders sticker in your own story by tapping the sticker, then tapping Add Sticker to Your Story.
How Restaurants can set up a Food Order Button on Instagram
Restaurants can go to their Instagram settings, choose a ChowNow option and add a link to its online menu and generate an 'order now' button that the restaurant can add to its Instagram profile or Stories.
