Durian Whisky is now a thing and it tastes like a milkshake

The ‘King of Fruits’, the divisive Durian has now been made into a whisky and apparently it tastes like an alcoholic milkshake.

Made by Malaysian company Tropical Wine Sdn Bhd., the drink is called a whisky, even though it doesn’t actually conform to any of the standards of traditional whisky. It is instead, an incredibly sweet liqueur that fans of the Durian fruit will no doubt be delighted with.

It is claimed that the drink is made “brewed from 100% pure, delicious flesh of the Musang King durian,” using a “patented fermentation technology” that combine the juice of the fruit, ethanol and sugar.

The Durian is not appreciated by everybody but those who do like it really do love it. While it is the national fruit of Singapore, because of its noxious odour, it is banned from public transport in the country.

Durian Whisky doesn’t have the overpowering odour of the fruit. It manages to capture the essence of the tangy, sweet flavour, combined with booze. The concoction was launched at the Yummy Food Expo in Singapore last month and proved such a hit that the larger bottle (750 ml) is now out of stock.

The Durian Whisky is a novelty as previously a myth existed that the combination of Durian and alcohol were a toxic combination. The company’s website sets out an explanation as to why Durian Whisky is perfectly safe to drink and cites a study by the University of Singapore which states that “Alcohol and Durian is not dangerous”.

“Durian and alcohol combination may only cause mild symptoms unsteady gait, reduction in metabolism of alcohol and bloating.”

“Durian and alcohol is not fatal!”

Well that’s that then. For some fans of whisky or of Durian, the idea of this drink may offend . However, if you can wrap your head around the concept the sweet Bailey’s type liqueur has a lot going for it. The milkshake-type flavour and creamy texture are not unpleasant and with an ABV of 18%, it sits somewhere in the limoncello category. No doubt mixologists and confectioners will find ways to work the drink into their creations, and of course, with so many die-hard fans of the fruit itself, there will be those who will choose Durian Whisky as their tipple of choice.
