Aside from New York City, where else could you find the finest mozzarella and bread outside of Italy? It turns out that Berlin has plenty of options to choose from. The city's famous Markthallen Neun, which sells a wealth of Italian products, has welcomed new Italian startups.
August saw the opening of Sironi 'Il Pane da Milano', a bakery that sells freshly-baked ciabatta, focaccia and a multitude of crusty Italian breads made with a mother dough. Why did the owners choose Berlin? "It was love at first sight when I moved to Kreuzberg," owner Alfredo Sironi told Il Mitte in an interview. "A magnificent building which houses a market-oriented to quality: perfect for what we wanted to do.''
That same month saw the opening of White Out, a stand specializing in fresh buffalo mozzarella. Owner Alessandro Salerno sells award-winning mozzarella he flies in from Caseificio Torricelle, a cheese factory in near Salerno. For now, White Out will be open for weekly events and special ocassions like the Cheese Berlin festival.
