Iconic chef Jacques Pépin has long been known for his artistic abilities too. Now, the former sidekick of Julia Child and personal chef to several French heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle, has collaborated with Sur La Table to create an exclusive kitchen and dinnerware range featuring his artwork.
The Jacques Pépin Collection includes ceramics, utensils, pots and cottons, adorned with his paintings of chickens and vegetables (there’s also a Jacques Pépin cookbook in the collection called Poulet & Legumes). Whether you’ll be able to cook like him after using them is another matter entirely – watch Pépin prepare an onion in the video below and watch Jacques Pépin demonstrate seven knife techniques here.
Open Letter
Pépin isn’t the first chef to launch a range of tableware of course. Nobu Matsuhisa recently launched a new dinnerware set with a cooperative of young Japanese potters.
Last month we reported on Pépin’s open letter in which he argued that reality TV is killing restaurants. Pépin claims that “so-called ‘reality’ shows ... portray the restaurant kitchen in a chaotic and negative light, and I believe it is a disservice to our trade and to young people who want to go into this business.”
Do you agree?
