Despite there being no bidders allowed in the room, online demand soared as the World White Truffle of Alba Auction achieved record sales.
The auction, which donates all proceeds to charity and is in its 21st year, is organised by the International White Truffle Fair of Alba, the Enoteca Regionale del Piemonte, and the Consorzio di Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe Dogliani, among others. This year it raised a record-breaking €482,000.
The region of Piedmont is currently under Italy’s ‘red zone’ category of Covid-19 restrictions, and therefore the International White Truffle Fair of Alba has had to curtail real-world events and instead migrate all activity to the Internet.
Demand for the Alba white truffle continues to climb worldwide and the funds raised by this auction will go to fund various charities in the Piedmont region, including the Covid departments in hospitals that are coming under intense pressure as cases of the disease surge.
Conducted by Enzo Iacchetti, Caterina Balivo and Paolo Vizzari at the Castle of Grinzane Cavour (Cuneo), the online auction featured participants from Hong Kong, Moscow, Singapore and Dubai. The final lot, weighing 900 grams, was won by a Hong Kong businessman for the price of €100,000.
