Known as the ‘blue zones’, these five areas, located in diverse locations across the globe are of particular interest to scientists who study longevity, as they contain the highest number of centenarians per capita in the world.
The five famous blue zones are Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; the Ogliastra region, Sardinia; Loma Linda, California; and the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. These regions have attracted worldwide attention because the populations have an unusually high longevity, and people live longer and happier lives. The scientific community has been trying to ascertain why these people live so long; influential factors include genetic profile, community, religion, pollution, climate etc.
However, one of the main factors that contributes to a long life is of course diet, and these five blue zones all have distinct diets based on seasonality, local ingredients, scarcity and simple cooking techniques.
