New Year's Eve is one of those times when traditions and superstitions come to the fore and are practiced even by those who say they are reluctant to believe in luck. And yet we indulge in customary traditions because we so earnestly desire the blessings of the future – love, money and work.

Of course, food plays an integral role and we have compiled a list of traditional dishes around the world, good luck or health charms, which are consumed at the stroke of midnight or even at every stroke of the clock marking the passage from the old to the new year.

On festive tables set for New Year’s Eve we find foods that symbolise money and resemble the shape of coins, like lentils and grapes, as well as dishes that represent health and family, like Chinese tofu ball soup for abundance and prosperity, or marzipanschwein, which is typical of Austria and Germany.
