Kita Food Festival to explore the future of food in 2025

The Southeast Asia food festival will return to Singapore for a series of events in the new year

Kita Food Festival, which celebrates Southeast Asia’s enviable gastronomic scene, will explore the future of food in early 2025, with a series of seminars and a symposium to be held in Singapore, all of which will be open to the public.

Working with the data consultancy Synthesis, the series of events will look at what we might be eating in 10 to 20 years from now, using Synthesis’ ‘Menu 2034’ research into the impact of the climate crisis and population growth.

According to Kita, “The research looks at two likely scenarios for the future: Humans will look to the past to feed the future, using regenerative agriculture, reducing waste, and adopting a diet of abundant and native ingredients. Or, more likely, that we will adapt with technology and science to create novel foods and replicate the flavors of lost ingredients.”

Three evening seminars will take place on January 20, February 10 and 24, exploring the above, with so-called ‘future food’ such as cultivated meats and beanless coffee and chocolate also available to try. The series will culminate with a future of food symposium on March 17, with as many as 400 guests, including chefs, educators, and food enthusiasts.

Speakers announced so far include Eelke Plasmeijer of Bali’s Locavore and Locavore NXT restaurants, culinary anthropologist Nithiya Laila, and Enzo Acerbi, co-founder of Vertical Oceans, a Singapore-based, urban agriculture pioneer.

Kita’s Singapore Weekender will also return from March 13 to 17, with plenty for hungry diners to enjoy, with four-hand dinners and kitchen takeovers from international chefs, pop-ups, and the usual Big Barbecue. This follows the successful Kuala Lumpur Weekender in September 2024.
