Le Du, Bangkok, has been named the number one restaurant on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant list 2023 sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna.
The restaurant was announced as top of the ranking at a ceremony held in Singapore at the Resorts World Sentosa. Sézanne, Tokyo, placed second, while Nusara, also in Bangkok, placed third.
The restaurant replaces chef Zaiyu Hasegawa’s Tokyo fine dining spot Den to be crowned as the best on the continent.
Serving modern Thai dining, Le Du’s tasting menu showcases the best of Thai gastronomy, with dishes like khao kluk kapi of river prawn on a bed of brown rice risotto, enhanced by umami-rich shrimp paste. Chef Thitid ‘Ton’ Tassanakajohn’s restaurant has featured regularly on previous Asia's 50 Best Restaurant lists, but today, it is sitting pretty on the top of the ranking.
The ceremony also acknowledged the winners of the individual awards that were given out in the prelude to the event. Chef Shinobu Namae was named 2023 Icon for his work at Tokyo restaurant L’Effervescence, as well as his work in sustainability as an academic and advocate.
Asia’s Best Female Chef this year is Filipino chef Johanne Siy of Lolla restaurant in Singapore while the One to Watch is Jakarta’s August restaurant, by chef Hans Christian and restaurateur Budi Cahyadi.
