Mike Jenkins (no relation) is a former political cartoonist and caricaturist. He’s also a full–time dad and every day for over 400 weekdays he’s been creating amazing lunch bag art for his daughter to take to school with her.
Washington, D.C.–based Jenkins, who was in charge of his three children’s lunches, wanted to liven up the lunchtimes of his youngest daughter Maggy after his two older children left for college. He began to create drawings every day, usually with a comment on the day of the week or the changing of the seasons.
His wife soon saw what he was doing and began posting the art on Facebook. After an enthusiastic response, Jenkins realised he couldn’t stop and 421 bags have been posted in total. Each brown paper lunch bag is six by 12 inches, while the illustrations are six by nine inches. Each bag takes about four hours to complete. Jenkins hopes to make a business out of the lunch bag art so that “everyone’s kids can have the coolest lunch bags.” He can be contacted via Capital Artworks.
The artist told The Washington Post: “Now Maggy is a sophomore in high school. She’s grown a lot, but still loves the lunch bag drawings and saves them all. Now that it’s September, it’s time to break out my pens and buy more bags.”
