The French government has made history by passing a law that will force all supermarkets of a certain size to donate unsold or unwanted food to charities or food banks.
The original bill was passed back in December and now the French senate has unanimously passed the proposal.
Under the new law, any supermarkets with that are 400 sq metres (4,305 sq ft) or bigger will be made to sign contracts with charities to donate their food.
Those who don’t sign contracts will be forced to pay fines of up to €75,000 or actually face jail time.
