The Ultimate Cookbook Database
Adding cooking books to your collection has become easier thanks to a new website that aims to “generate a ranking of the 1,000 most essential English language cookbooks of all time.”
Called 1,000 Cookbooks, the website features the cookbook recommendations of over 400 chefs, bloggers, authors and other food personalities, all of whom voted for their top picks.
Participating chefs include the Michelin-starred Fergus Henderson, Virgilio Martinez and Wylie Dufresne. Food writers who voted include Ruth Reichl, Timy Hayward and Amanda Hesser.
The website, which doubles as an app, has already been billed as the "Spotify for food." It was founded by food book publisher Jon Croft, who works at Absolute Press, and Matthew Cockerill, co-founder of Open Access Publisher, BioMed Central.
How It Works
Users can search for cookbooks by author and in dozens of categories such as world cuisines, desserts and ingredients. A really fun feature is that you can also search for cookbooks according to the music that is playing in your kitchen.
Listening to jazz? Then reach for The Zuni Café Cookbook or Elizabeth David’s French Provincial Cooking. Playing rock? Then your top pick is Marco Pierre White’s White Heat.
