Visiting the Castle of Vicarello is like taking a visit into the past: TV and technology are forbidden (as is air conditioning), but this doesn’t influence the quality of the service. The international hospitality guides consider it among the world’s most beautiful hotels located in a historical landmark. In 2011 it also earned the Best Spa honour from Traveller UK.
The most courageous choice was that of excluding electric outdoor lights in order to best “reflect” the original atmospheres. The result is spectacular in the summertime, when dinner is served against a stunning view of Maremma and the only lights for the diners are candles and oil lamps. Four suits open up onto the courtyard when the other three are free-standing structures among lavender, olive trees and rosemary bushes. The furnishings reflect two passionate travellers. Guests can talk long walks, swim in the pools, make day trips to Siena, Perugia and Grosseto, take cooking lessons and, most of all, rest and relax. Oil comes from centuries-old olive trees; autumn is the season that brings us to the vineyards, the dominion of Carlo Baccheschi Berti, who oversees the wine making.
The 6 hectares of vineyards below the Castle of Vicarello are cultivated according to organic methods, and the near-future goal is to become bio-dynamic. Vicarello produces three different wines: the Castello di Vicarello, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, Terre di Vico, a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot, Brunello di Montalcino, which is Sangiovese, distributed since 2011 in only 4,000 bottles.
