The UK has opened its first fully plant-based butchers and it’s already a big hit with customers, selling out on its opening day.
Rudy's Vegan Butcher in London opened its doors on World Vegan Day, with a range of plant-based meat alternatives on offer, such as ‘baycon’ and ‘lobstah’. They hit the ground running too, as they sold out of stock on the first day and received 100 online orders in the first ten minutes of opening.
The butcher sells vegan alternatives to beef, chicken and turkey, typically made from soya and seitan, including homemade pastrami, dirty burger patties, cheeze sauce & chilli-non-carne, as well as a rack of jack, lobstah salad, meatballs, chick'n lover pate and shredded BBQ pulled porc.
Delighted with the turnout for the first day of opening, Rudy’s posted on Instagram: "This was the line at 10:54am before we even opened and it didn’t slow down for hours! 100 online orders in the first ten minutes!
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, messaged with love, ordered online and shouted out our news. It was an unbelievable turnout."
The EU has recently put ‘veggie burgers’ back on the menu as European farmers failed in their attempt to ban companies calling their plant-based alternative ‘burgers’ and other terms associated with meat products. Britain of course, has left the EU, but the term ‘vegan butcher’ attracted its share of detractors and people poking fun at the concept, including Piers Morgan, who posted: "A vegan butcher's shop... and people wonder why I've written a book about the world going nuts."
Demand is high and customers have been flocking to the store before lockdown measures have forced it to temporarily close its doors. However, for those who want to get their hands on the faux meat products, Rudy’s delivers nationwide (UK).
